    Needs, wants & stewardship

Recognize essential needs, make a deliberate choice, and protect the people who depend on you.

    Lesson 1 of 3

    What matters before what costs

Money is a tool for caring for people and meeting goals. A need supports basic health, safety or necessary responsibilities: food, shelter, medicine and essential transport. A want can bring joy but can usually wait. Context matters: internet access might be needed for work or school, while an upgraded entertainment package is optional. Never judge another household from one purchase.

    Worked example · fictional

A fictional household has $40. Necessary food costs $25 and a toy costs $20. Buying both would cost $45. Meet the food need first; postpone the toy or choose a less costly option.

    Talk it through

Who depends on you? Name one need and one want in a made-up household. Explain why the distinction matters.
